About TVA Credit Union
Our History and Our Officials/Management

History
Muscle Shoals TVA Employees Federal Credit Union was established by the Farm Credit Administration June 24, 1936, and enjoys the distinction of being Alabama's oldest federally chartered credit union.

A few days following the receipt of the charter, a meeting was held for all TVA employees on the Reservation at what was then the Wilson Dam Library located northeast of the TVA Multipurpose Building. This became the kickoff for the credit union, and most of those in attendance became members through a minimum investment of 25 cents.

The first share subscribers were George C. Baker, Oscar Flaat, E. M. Gober, Leon Joubert, S. S. Lewis, W. C. Lindsey, Gilbert R. Mayer, Virgil H. Reynolds, O. K. Stumpe, Josiah Work, and Charles H. Young.

Josiah Work, chief of the Raw Materials Section at the Phosphate Plant, became the first president of the credit union. Julia M. Rost became the first secretary for the credit union. John S. Speer was listed as vice president, and Oscar Flatt as treasurer. The first Board of Directors and member of the Credit Committee are listed in the minutes of the first meeting as Josiah Work, John S. Speer, Julia M. Rost, Oscar Flaat, John W. Acton, John M. Almquist, Kelly L. Elmore, J. J. Murrill, Dr. R. B. Watson, W. C. Lindsey, George C. Baker, and E. L. Pollard.

In 1989, Sheffield Federal Credit Union merged with the Muscle Shoals TVA Employees Federal Credit Union. This brought the employees of the City of Sheffield into our field of membership, along with their family members.

In 1992, the name of the credit union was changed to TVA Federal Credit Union to better reflect the growing and changing field of membership, as additional employee groups were added.

In 2004, Colbert - Browns' Ferry Federal Credit union merged with TVA Federal Credit Union, bringing TVA employees working at Colbert Steam Plant and Browns' Ferry Nuclear Plant into our field of membership, along with their family members.

In 2006, Valley Employees Credit Union in Athens, Alabama merged with our credit union. Located in downtown Athens, this gave the credit union another branch, along with the Browns' Ferry Branch, to serve our members living in Limestone County. This merger brought the credit union a branch in Arab, Alabama and expanded our services into Marshall County.

Also in 2006, the Board of Directors moved to change from a federally chartered credit union to a state chartered credit union. In doing so, we were able to expand our services to cover the seven North Alabama counties of Colbert, Lauderdale, Limestone, Marshall, Morgan, Lawrence and Franklin. Along with this change in charter, the name of the credit union became TVA Credit Union.

Many changes have occurred between 1936 and the present as many of the older credit union members can see when looking through the present credit union offices and remembering its first location in a filing cabinet behind Oscar Flatt's desk on the second floor of the old administration building on the reservation. Yet, the principle behind the reason for the credit union's existence has remained the same - people helping people.
